Grafting

Grafting is the art of adding a new variety, cultivar, or even species onto another tree. Almost all commercial fruit is produced by grafting, which is where you can create a clone of a tree and thus, an orchard that produces the same fruit on all the trees. In the home garden, you can use grafting to add new types of fruit to your tree, for example, a citrus “cocktail” could have grapefruit, lemon, and tangerine on the same trunk! This is also true for stonefruit, where you could have a plum, pluot, pluerry, and nectarine all on the same tree. This is perfect for those who have limited space and would like to vary their fruit selections, and it also spreads the fruit out over more months of the year.
